In twelve months that most of us would like to forget, there is more optimism about 2021 with the rollout of the vaccines. We have plenty of dates on the calendar to look forward to, and our favourite is always World Book Day. A charity event in the UK that is held every year on the first Thursday in March; which this year lands on Thursday 4th March 2021.
It is customary that each year on this day, every child in the United Kingdom who is in full-time education, with no exceptions, is given a voucher to spend on a book. The intention is to help those who can’t afford to purchase their own books and encourage more children of a young age to get into reading – which has become slightly less common with the emergence of the internet and video games.
The charity event was started back in 1995, with the first event in the UK launched by the then Prime Minister Tony Blair. The event held here in the UK is a localised version of a wider global World Book Day run by UNESCO. Originally held in early to mid-April, organisers of the event moved the dates to avoid potential clashes with the Easter festive season.
As the event began to gain traction over the years, it also started to support other charitable initiatives such as the Quick Reads Initiative and Books For Hospitals. The number of children in receipt of book tokens is on the increase every year, thanks to the scheme’s growth.
Here at JJMoffs, we are proud to be supporters of World Book Day. Forever passionate about books and reading, we are keen to encourage the younger generations to pick up a book and immerse themselves in it. We are proud to support the initiative, and although our planned events won’t happen this year, we’re sure children will be dressing up as their favourite book character and enjoying a book all over the country.
