“Storytelling can be found enriching lives everywhere. The sharing between teller and listener empowers, feeding the imagination from one generation to the next.”- Society for Storytelling.
Here at JJMoffs Independent Book Publisher, not only are we a fan of all things when it comes to books and reading, but we also appreciate the magic of storytelling, and we want it to come back stronger than ever. That’s why we are big advocates and supporters of national storytelling week. We have some lovely children’s books stocked in our online shop that make the perfect resources to encourage storytelling and read during national storytelling week. To mark this important event, we are offering a 30% discount for orders over £10.
National storytelling week lands between January 28th and February 6th in 2021 and is a whole week devoted to praising the magic of stories. It encourages people to take up storytelling and discover the values of being both on the telling and listening end. In recent years, due to the emergence of the internet, storytelling has sadly found itself on the decline and National Storytelling Week aims to reverse that trend and encourage a resurgence in reading.
Storytelling has been around for thousands of years. Some of the oldest depictions and evidence date back to early religion when storytelling was the only way to spread the word and tell of prophecies. Over the centuries that followed, it grew in popularity until the invention of the internet (and other technologies) which led to an increasing lack of interest.
The week itself generally comprises many different events across the UK, held in various institutions, including schools, libraries, universities, hospitals, care homes, book shops, etc. Well, it did before Covid. Maybe this year, the technology that has seen a decline in storytelling will enable us to read with those we cannot be with.
Everyone needs a bit of escapism, and children even more so during this most difficult of times. To see the delight on children’s faces as they hear stories of wizards and dragons, adventurers and animals, mischief-makers and villains, fairy tales and folklore is terrific. A good story conjures up intrigue, suspense and imagery which enthral children and stay with them for many a year, so take advantage of our offer this week!
Let’s embrace National Storytelling Week this year, and make time for storytelling. Age doesn’t matter; stories are for everyone!
